JCU Bluestreaks for Greater Food Security in Cleveland
We are a group of first-year students in the Arrupe Scholars Program* at John Carroll University. Our program is a mission-based scholarship program that focuses on study, research, and advocacy for those who are poor and marginalized in our world. The program is named after Fr. Pedro Arrupe, the former leader of the Jesuits who has called all of us to solidarity and justice as people for and with others. To further our knowledge, we are studying the complex problems of local and global hunger and food insecurity; our studies look at the effects of poverty and hunger in our own Cleveland community.A central part of our study is the exemplary work of the Greater Cleveland Foodbank. The urgency of their work has become even more clear as we see the devastating effects of Covid-19 on those who are suffering any level of food insecurity, especially those whose ability to work has been or will be impacted by the pandemic.
As we observe social distancing meant to protect the most vulnerable among us and flatten the spread of this virus, we are asking ourselves what can we do to help? How can we support one another and raise awareness of the fragility of food security? To these ends, we've joined the Greater Cleveland Food Bank to fight against hunger by starting a Virtual Food Drive! You can help us reach our fundraising goal by donating to our page and sharing our information with family and friends. We challenge all Bluestreaks, past and present, along with their family, friends, and others in their social networks to consider donating $1, $2, $5, $10 or more to this worthy cause. $1 buys 4 meal ordinarily, but because of a generous matching gift to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, it effectively buys 8 meals.
The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our community has the nutritious food they need daily. In order to serve the members of our community, they distribute food to nearly 1,000 local food pantries and shelters. Their mission does not stop there, they also offer hot meal programs, mobile pantries, programs for the elderly, and other nonprofit agencies to connect with all in need members of our community. The Food Bank also prepares nutritious meals in their on-site kitchen and assists eligible low income Northeast Ohioans through the SNAP program. In total, the Food Bank serves over 300,000 people each year.
Throughout Northeast Ohio, one in six people are food insecure – meaning they may not know where their next meal will come from. Your support will help alleviate this uncertainty, especially in this confusing time. Every dollar that we raise will help provide four meals for our neighbors in need!
